2010 Boal Barn Season
Twelve Angry Men | Mrs. McThing | Wonderful Town | A Streetcar Named Desire
Hello, Dolly! | The Curious Savage

September 7-11, September 14-18, 2010     at 8pm

The Curious Savage
    A Play in Three Acts
    by John Patrick

A modern comedy taking place in the living room of The Cloisters, an upscale sanatorium somewhere in Massachusetts, sometime in the 1950s.  This play contrasts the eccentricities of the residents of the institution with the rapacious greed of the family of its newest resident, the widow Ethel Savage.  With a hidden ten million dollars in negotiable bonds at stake, the patients seem saner than the “normal” family, who certainly put the “fun” back in dysfunctional!

ROLES

WOMEN
Mrs. Ethel Savage - Somewhere on the dark side of middle age, she is a seemingly frail woman with hidden reserves of strength. She is intelligent, quick and witty, but capable of playing dumb as the situation warrants.

Fairy May - Wan and slender, early 20s to early 30s, with a somewhat tenuous grasp on what is going on in the world around her. A “guest” at The Cloisters.

Florence - 30-40, elegant and gentle, intelligent but troubled. A “guest” at The Cloisters.

Mrs. Paddy - Middle aged, ferocious and hostile. A fierce painter who must disrupt whatever is going on. She speaks only in short “rants.” A “guest” at The Cloisters.

Lily Belle - Lilly Belle is given no last name probably because she has been married so many times we have lost track. She is nonetheless a Savage, sister to Titus and Samuel, and Ethel’s stepdaughter. Early 40s and hating it, she clings to appearing chic and assured, although she has an undercurrent of vulgarity.

Miss Wilhelmina - “Miss Willie” is about the same age as Jeffrey, efficient and attractive, she is the cheerful “jailer” at The Cloisters.

MEN
Hannibal - In his 30s. Cherubic, sweet and helpful. Something of a puppy dog who thinks he can play the violin. A “guest” at The Cloisters.

Jeffrey - 25-35, handsome and dignified, but hiding from the world with which he is afraid to interact. A “guest” at The Cloisters.

Titus Savage - Pompous U.S. Senator, self important and full of himself. Cold and authoritative, but basically ineffective. In his 40s–50s. Ethel Savage’s stepson.

Samuel Savage - A judge by dint of appointment rather than merit (the most reversed judge on the bench). An undistinguished ditherer, indecisive and ineffectual. In his 40s. Also Ethel Savage’s stepson.

Dr. Emmett - The owner of The Cloisters. Fair and nonjudgmental of his “guests,” he has their best interests at heart. A gentle disciplinarian.
