Hello, Dolly!
A Musical Comedy
Book by Michael Stewart
Music and Lyrics by Jerry Herman
Based on the play The Matchmaker
by Thornton Wilder
Set in 1890s metropolitan New York City, Hello, Dolly! tells the story of widowed cantankerous tightwad businessman Horace Vandergelder who has employed the deliciously meddlesome matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi to find him a new wife.
On the same day he goes to meet his new fiance, Vandergelder’s two clerks—Cornelius and Barnaby—escape to the big city for a day of adventure while the irascible widower’s niece Ermengarde elopes with an artist.
Meanwhile, it turns out that Dolly has ideas of her own as to who would be the best new Mrs. Vandergelder.
All these plots and plans culminate in a riot and mass arrest at the famed Harmonia Gardens Restaurant, and only Dolly can get everyone out of jail and on their way to a happy ending.
In addition to the classic title song, this tuneful score includes “Before the Parade Passes By,” “It Only Takes a Moment,” and “Put on Your Sunday Clothes.”
