Twelve Angry Men
A Play in Three Acts
by Sherman L. Sergel
Adapted from the television show
by Reginald Rose
A nineteen-year-old man has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father.
It looks like an open-and-shut case . . . until one of the jurors begins opening the eyes of the others to the facts.
Each juror reveals his own character as the murder is reenacted and testimonies are reexamined.
Tempers get short, arguments grow heated, and the jurors become Twelve Angry Men.

ROLES
MEN
Foreman of the Jury - a small, petty individual, impressed with his own authority, quite formal, not overly bright, but dogged
Juror No. Two - a meek, hesitant person who finds it difficult to maintain any opinions of his own, easily swayed and usually adopts the opinion of the last person who has spoken
Juror No. Three - a very strong, very forceful, extremely opinionated individual within whom we can detect a streak of sadism, humorless and intolerant of opinions of others, accustomed to forcing his wishes and views upon others
Juror No. Four - seems to be a person of wealth and position, a practiced speaker who presents himself well at all times, seems to feel a little bit above the rest of the jurors, only concerned with the facts in this case and appalled with the behavior of the others
Juror No. Five - a naive, very frightened young man, takes the obligations of being a juror in this case very seriously, but finds it difficult to speak up when older jurors have the floor
Juror No. Six - an honest but dull-witted individual who comes upon decisions slowly and carefully, finds it difficult to create positive opinions, but listens to and digests and accepts those opinions offered by others which appeal to him the most
Juror No. Seven - a loud, flashy, glad-handed sales-person type who has more important things to do than to sit on a jury, quick to show temper and equally quick to form opinions on things about which he knows nothing, a bully, and, of course, a coward
Juror No. Eight - a quiet, thoughtful, gentle individual who sees all sides of every question and constantly seeks the truth, a person of strength tempered with compassion, above all wants justice to be done, and will fight to see that it is
Juror No. Nine - a mild, gentle, old soul, long since defeated by life and now merely waiting to die, recognizes what he has become, and mourns the days when it would have been possible to be courageous without shielding himself behind the many years
Juror No. Ten - an angry, bitter person who antagonizes almost at sight, also a bigot who places no values on any human life save his own, an individual who has been going nowhere and is going nowhere and knows it deep within
Juror No. Eleven - a refugee from Europe, speaks with an accent and is ashamed, humble, almost subservient to the others, will honestly seek justice because he has suffered through so much injustice
Juror No. Twelve - a slick, bright advertising professional who thinks of human beings in terms of percentages, graphs and polls, has no real understanding of people, a superficial snob, but trying to be a good person
Guard - can be any age, wears a uniform
