The theatre, like the fresco, is art fitted to its place.  And therefore it is above all else the human art, the living art.

Apprentice & Intern Programs

Apprentice Program

SCCT's Apprentice Program is designed as an introduction to the various aspects of theatre, and is for youth age 12 and older.  Apprentices meet for classes each morning and participate in afternoon shop hours, gaining experience in acting, scenic & costume construction, and general stagecraft.  Apprentices also have the opportunity to serve on run crews for the summer season productions.  An apprentice coordinator develops and implements the program's curriculum in consultation with SCCT's producers.

The 2009 program spans 11 weeks from June 22 through the Apprentice Show, September 2-5, Labor Day weekend.  The daily schedule for the first 10 weeks is Monday through Friday from 10am to 5pm, with class from 10 to Noon and practical experience in the shops and theatre facility following lunch.  In the 11th week, hours are in the evenings for technical rehearsals and performances of the Apprentice Show.

SCCT is pleased to welcome William Daniel Daup as this season's apprentice coordinator.  A retired public school teacher, Bill devotes himself full-time to community theatre, not just with SCCT, but also with the Stone Arch Players of Lewistown and at the McConnellstown Playhouse.  In the past two winters, Bill has taught second and third grade classes with SCCT’s theatre workshop for children.  Recent appearances at the Barn include Sister Mary Regina in Nunsense and Coach Benny Van Buren in Damn Yankees.

Bill's plan for the summer curriculum centers on the study of a different playwright each week, focusing on one great work from each playwright and presenting scenes from these plays each Friday afternoon.  The apprentices will also have an opportunity to perform at the Arts Festival in State College in July.

Intern Program

SCCT's Intern Program is designed for individuals who are at least 15 years of age and have a minimum of two years experience as an apprentice, or other comparable theatre experience.  Interns specialize in one particular area of theatre, working directly with SCCT's professional staff.  Interns' daily schedules are set in consultation with their respective staff members.  Interns can specialize in one of the following areas:  Scenery, Costumes, Lighting, Sound, Stage Management, or Theatre Administration.

Interns are expected to serve as run crew members in their specialization.  Positions available include light board operator, sound board operator, wardrobe mistress, assistant stage manager, house manager, or box office staff.  Interns are also given the unique opportunity to serve as designers and production staff for the Apprentice Show.  Working in consultation with their respective staff members, Interns attend production meetings and are responsible for implementation and execution of their designs.

The fee for participating in the Intern Program is $25.  This fee includes a one-year SCCT membership and a black backstage t-shirt.
